WELL-KNOWN Walvis Bay resident Awie Brand, who was a long-time reporter and editor of the coastal newspaper, Namib Times, was murdered at his restaurant at the harbour town on Friday evening. The 58-year-old Brand was found dead early on Saturday morning in 'Die Restaurant' on Walvis Bay's 10th Road.

New Era Corporation Board Chairman, Vilbard Usiku, has resigned with immediate effect. Usiku has resigned from the New Era board as well as Namzim Newspapers. A statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology late yesterday thanked Usiku for his “outstanding performance and loyalty” during his tenure of office.

High Court Judge Annel Silungwe drastically slashed the amount demanded by Kenyan nationals and former lecturers, Dr Zecharia Bolo and his wife Lucy Bolo, in their defamation lawsuit against Informanté newspaper.

Windhoek, June 19, 2008 The Government of Namibia has announced the scrapping of 15 per cent Value Added Tax, (VAT) on some basic food stuffs to ease the burden of Namibians who have been severely affected by the rise in global food prices.
The Namibian Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, MISA Namibia has noted with concern, complaints by the Informante that the organisers of the Miss Namibia beauty pageant, has refused to grant them (Informante) entry to the pageant for coverage.

African news editors, producers, channel managers as well as other leaders in the print media or broadcasting fields can apply to participate in a leadership program in Parktown, Johannesburg from July 30 to August 8.
The deadline to apply is June 27.
Applications are invited in any language for the annual Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) Awards for television and radio programs.

The Media Institute of Southern Africa Namibia Chapter was officially launched in November 1998. The Chapter is one of 11 chapters in the SADC countries that form MISA. Since its inception MISA has its focus on the need to promote free, independent and pluralistic media as envisaged in the Windhoek Declaration.
